Cletus Clay

Cletus Clay
Developer: TunaSnax
Nomination: Excellence in visual art
Platform: XBLA, PC (just videos available for now)
Website
Description: Take on the role of Cletus Clay, redneck extraordinaire and last true patriot, as he defends the earth from aliens using little more than his violence and inbreeding. If we’re lucky, the two concepts won’t be mixed.

Adam’s Thoughts:
There have been a scant few claymation games over the years, so Cletus Clay is a shoe-in for visual art nomination. The videos available don’t look like the game exactly captures the subtleties of human motion, but it has that claymation charm.

The gameplay looks like it’ll be rememiscent of Alien Hominid, albeit with the roles reversed and a little more emphasis on platforming than action. That said, a great portion of the possible fun may be determined by your feelings about rednecks and howitzers. It may not be the newest idea on earth, but it looks pretty and (shudder) thematically consistent.

Katie’s Thoughts:
Cletus Clay happens to be the first game I’ve come across to be in claymation. Even though I know it’s not the first time it’s been done, there is still a sense of grandeur and awesomeness to see a game done in this style. Interestingly, in with the development blog is a brief history of games done in claymation, and it’s impressive to see how far they’ve come. It’s hard to tell how much of it is the difference between the graphical capabilities of an original Playstation and the XBox 360, and how much of it is Cletus Clay being new, but the game does look even better when compared to it’s historical antecedents. It certainly brings a new, interesting skin to the platforming genre.

Katie, modern technology is allowing us to do a lot of things you simply couldn’t do on previous platforms.

We’re using HD photos for our textures and we’re also making use of shaders and meshing in places to create the overall environment.

The flip side is that Cletus is an action game, so we have to ensure motion is smoother than may be expected otherwise.
WIthout smooth motion gameplay can suffer, and all said and done this has to be great fun to play.

Adam, surely we all love our country folk? How could you even question that?

[...] Clay is shaping up to be a tight little 2D brawler; more so than the videos really capture. The game follows the exploits of Cletus and Emmett, whose livestock has been unjustly stolen by [...]
