There were a great many games up for the 2009 IGF awards, and they all had something special to offer. Awards were given for excellence in visual art, audio, design, and titles’ technical excellence. Additionally, games were recognized for their innovation, popularity, and for being best in show for both students and professional developers. Of course, we wouldn’t be much of a games criticism site if we didn’t have our own picks for each category (now possible because we’ve had hands-on time with all the games), so we’ll be posting our picks alongside the panel’s. Without further ado, here are the winners of each award and our picks.
| Award | IGF | Adam | Katie |
| Technical Excellence | Cortex Command | Incredibots | Osmos |
| Excellence in Visual Art | Machinarium | Machinarium | Machinarium |
| Excellence in Design | Musaic Box | Osmos | Retro/Grade |
| Excellence in Audio | Brain Pipe | Retro/Grade | Retro/Grade |
| Innovation | Between | You Have to Burn the Rope | Mightier |
| Direct2Drive Vision Award | Osmos | Dyson | Dyson |
| Audience Award | Cortex Command | The Maw | The Maw |
| Best Student Game | Tag: The Power of Paint | The Unfinished Swan | Tag: The Power of Paint |
| Seamus McNally Grand Prize | Blueberry Garden | Dyson | Dyson |
It’s difficult to pick just one game, because each finalist was remarkable in its category of nomination. Our congratulations go to the IGF winners, but don’t let the competition diminish the brilliance of the games that may not have won. If you have picks of your own, we’d love to hear your choices for the awards and why you liked them.
