U.N. Weighs in on Game Content

August 28th, 2009 by pixelsocks

American legislators try to regulate video games so often that it’s barely news any more. However, when the United Nations gets in on the action, it’s time to sit up and take notice. On August 7, Japan submitted a report to the U. N. Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, and the committee saw some room for improvement. The committee recommended a “ban [on] the sale of video games or cartoons involving rape and sexual violence against women which normalize and promote sexual violence against women and girls.”

Japan is currently conducting a three-year study of child prostitution and pornography for future legislation, and the U. N. committee has recommended that the ban be written into law at the same time.

Are there many video games out there that normalize violence-against-women (as opposed to normalizing plain old violence and brutality)?
