It’s not every day that one of the pillars underlying a franchise outright disappears, but Akira Yamaoka left Konami today (via originalsoundversion.com). Yamaoka contributed compositions to every game in the Silent Hill series. The atmospheric survival horror franchise has been critically acclaimed for excellence in sound and music design.
Neither Konami nor Yamaoka have commented on whether he will continue composing for the series as a freelancer, or even why the sudden departure occurred. However, the essential role of music in atmosphere makes it seem like the silent hill franchise could be in for a few changes.
Soundtracks have a ubiquitous character in games (I think my mother can still hum the Final Fantasy shop theme), so their contributions to a game’s atmosphere are easy to take for granted. It’s probably hard to toil in relative obscurity, so take a moment to wish Yamaoka the best in his future projects.

Major blow to the series there, the sound design on the games really was brilliant.
