If you were worried that Akira Yamaoka’s sudden departure from Konami would be a blow not only to Silent Hill but gaming at large, you should probably revise your priorities can rest easy. The onetime Silent Hill composer and producer has landed a job with Grasshopper Manufacture. The studio is home to Goichi Suda (Suda51) and his…atypical games like, Killer7 and No More Heroes.
Yamaoka expects to primarily contribute composition to his first project, a “mysterious very unique horror-packed action game” that Suda announced in August. Details about the title remain scarce, but it sounds right up Yamaoka’s alley.
Regarding his new appointment, the Konami expatriate said, “I saw Grasshopper as one of those few Japanese outfits whose games can appeal to an overseas audience.” This was certainly nice of him to say, but Suda’s claim to fame is his bizarre and inaccessible approach to storytelling and gameplay. It’s good art house stuff, but lacks broad appeal. Of course, Silent Hill isn’t exactly the poster child for “comfortably normal,” so Yamaoka is in good company.
