New Comic for Captain Smiley

May 7th, 2010 by pixelsocks

We haven’t had much time to talk about Twisted Pixel’s new project Comic Jumper, what with the IGF interviews and all. However, the Maw and Splosion Man developer just released details about the second of four comic books that will appear in the game. So we’re about due.

Comic Jumper will follow the adventures of Captain Smiley, fading comic star, as he guest-stars in various comics to revive his career. From the press release:

Art Director David Leung says, “This is so overly ambitious, it’s pretty much the dumbest thing I’ve ever done. But at our expense, players will be treated to something I don’t think has ever been attempted before: four completely distinct and historically relevant art styles all in one place.” After a long pause Leung solemnly adds, “I just hope my wife and kids remember who I am when this is over.”

This second comic is called Nanoc The Obliviator and will be styled after the work of Frank Frazetta and Conan the Barbarian. In addition to the complete break in art style, the second comic will be scored by a new composer, Joshua R. Mosley. Wrap them all together, and it adds up to pulp fantasy, which will likely make for delicious comedy.

If you’re interested in lots of details, Twisted Pixel has posted interviews with the pillars of the design team here along with a lot of preview art. As with most things they post, there’s a nice mix of insightful and funny in there. Yeah that’s right, entertaining and educational.
