As Pixelsocks and Mario play with gravity wells in their second jaunt through space, I’m stealing the spotlight and doing today’s news.
Now, it’s been long established that there is not an even sex split among gamers. There simply are more male gamers out there than female gamers. Yet between XBox Live voice chat, VoIP-enabled raiding, and The Guild, it has been easy forget that we’re such a minority that we get overlooked completely. So I was pretty surprised when I came across this poll on 1up today.
Have you observed them?
At first blush, I was simply surprised by the very existence of this poll. I mean, Ventrillo “outed” female raiders a long time ago, and even in my relatively small WoW guild, I’m not the only woman. But when looking at the numbers, I was surprised by how the poll turned out. Okay, 4% reporting as female. Lower than I would have thought, but I know I’m a minority.
But with 35% of respondents saying they don’t know any girls, and 8% saying the “girls” they know are actually male, that makes for 43% of the respondents believing they don’t know any females online. Seriously? I know I joke about there not being any women on the internet or playing WoW, but it’s supposed to be one of those “obviously not true” jokes.
Finally, apparently girls can either be fun to play with, or playing because of their boyfriends. Woman can’t be ninja looters? Total selfish jerks? I may lose any remaining female cred for this, but our two X-chromosomes doesn’t automatically make us good sports.
